Ernest Nathan "Dutch" Morial (October 9, 1929 – December 24, 1989) was an American lawyer, jurist, civil rights advocate, and politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he was the first African-American mayor of New Orleans, Louisiana, serving from 1978 to 1986. Joan Adams Mondale was born in Eugene, Oregon on August 8, 1930. She was one of three daughters of Eleanor Jane (Hall) Adams and Reverend John Maxwell Adams. Dr. Adams was a Presbyterian minister and for many years was chaplain at Macalester College in St. Paul.
